Summer Camping Checklist: Essential Items to Bring on Your Trip

Home » Summer Camping Checklist: Essential Items to Bring on Your Trip

Planning a camping trip can sometimes be tricky. There are many food and clothing items that are necessary for a successful trip and most of the time we don’t even realize we have forgotten something until it comes time to use that item. Unfortunately by then, it is already too late. If you’re in the process of planning a camping vacation for your family or friends, making a checklist of the items you are going to bring will help you organize your thoughts and prevent you from forgetting something.

The items that you are going to need will vary depending on the type of shelter you will be staying in. It makes sense that you will have to pack a lot more if you’re staying in a tent without running water, a stove, or electricity. If this is the case, you should do extensive research on all the required equipment needed to survive in the wilderness without these items. Less preparation is needed if you will be camping in an RV or motor home. Most RV campsites provide power plug-ins so that electricity is available. Base your list off of the things that will not be accessible to you while on your trip.

Some essential items that you will need to bring on your summer camping trip include:

  • Basic first aid kit— A first aid kit is necessary in order to take care of those inevitable, minor cuts and scrapes. Band- Aids, bug repellents, antiseptic, Advil, Aloe-Vera, and nail clippers are all good items to include in your kit.
  • Appropriate clothing— Even during the dry, summer months, it’s hard to tell when a rainstorm or cold front will move in. Make sure to pack waterproof apparel and jackets just in case.
  • Cooking and eating utensils— Unless you want to be cooking and eating with your hands, don’t forget to pack pans, pots, bowls, plates, forks, spoons, knives and whatever other utensils you may need.
  • Bedding, blankets, and pillows— After having a blast in the sun all day, you will want to have a nice, comfortable bed to crash in at night. Extra blankets and pillows are always a good idea.
  • Fun activities— If recreation items will not be provided by the campsite, or you’ll have little ones with you, don’t forget to bring balls, Frisbees, bubbles, and other fun activities to keep busy.
  • Sun protectants— Sitting and playing out in the blazing sun can have an effect on your body in mere minutes. Sun glasses, sun screen, and hats are important for protecting your skin and body from the powerful sun.
  • Water, water, water!— It is crucial that everyone stays hydrated in the scorching Texas heat. Before going on your trip, be familiar with all nearby sources of water. If a clean water supply is not going to be available to you, make sure to pack plenty.

Some commonly forgotten items that you may need include:

  • Flashlights (and extra batteries!)
  • Toilet paper
  • Extra shoes and socks
  • Can opener
  • Trash bags
  • Bath towels and river/pool towels
